Gingival crevicular fluid and periodontal parameters alterations in differents brackets

Objective: To identify, in vivo, changes in the parameters Plaque Index (PI), Gingival Index (GI), Gingival Bleeding Index (GBI) and Crevicular Fluid Volume (F) in three different types of brackets, during a 60-day period of study, taking into account the dental crowding, overbite and overjet

Method: The sample consisted of 20 patients with a mean age of 11.5 years (range, 11-15 years) in the permanent dentition who received conventional metal brackets GeminiTM/3M Unitek (C) and two different self-ligating brackets: In-OvationRTM, Dentsply (I), and SmartClipTM 3M Unitek (SC) on the maxillary incisors and canines. The indices and the crevicular fluid volume were collected prior to orthodontic appliance placement (T0) and after 30 (T1) and 60 (T2) days. Statistical analysis of the experimental data was performed using the non-parametric tests of Friedman, Mann-Whitney and Wilcoxon at 5% significance level.

Result: There was no correlation between dental crowding, overjet and overbite with the Plaque Index, Gingival Index, Gingival Bleeding Index and Crevicular Fluid Volume at the baseline T0. No significant difference (p> 0.05) was found as compared T0 and T1, and T1 and T2 between the different bracket types for all the parameters studied. However, when comparing data obtained from T0 and T2 there was a significant difference for the parameters Plaque Index and Crevicular Fluid Volume only for the teeth that received the self-ligating bracket SmartClipTM (p <0.05).

Conclusion: The results indicate the occurrence of clinical changes after placement of orthodontic appliances. After 60 days, an increase in both plaque index and crevicular fluid volume in the teeth receiving self-ligating bracket SmartClipTM was observed, indicating an influence of the bracket design on the periodontal indices and crevicular fluid volume.
