Method: 12 females and 9 males having root caries (35 anteriors, 23 posteriors) participated in this study. For each patient, maximum 4 lesions were included. The depth, length and width of the lesions were measured. Lesions in the same patient were randomly divided into two groups and dentin surfaces were either lined with GlassLinerII or not. All Bond SE was applied and cured. Application of Majesty Esthetic composite resin to the both groups was performed according to the manufacturer. The restorations were evaluated by two experienced dentists at the end of the first week, 6th and 12th months for retention rate, sensitivity, secondary caries, marginal discoloration and marginal integrity. The data were statistically analyzed by Fisher's Exact Test.
Result: At the end of the six months, one patient had lost one of the fillings. At the end of one-year follow-up, two patients lost one of the fillings; another patient lost both of the fillings whereas in other patient’s tooth has been extracted because of periodontal diseases. One patient chose crown restorations and one patient couldn’t come on recall because he undergone surgery. Consequently there were 48 teeth left to assess. There were no statistically significant difference between the lined or unlined restorations for retention rate, secondary caries, sensitivity, marginal discoloration and marginal integrity problems at every recalls (p>0.05). The size of the restorations had no effect on the retention rate (p<0.05).
Conclusion: Within the limitation of this study, both restorative techniques were accepted as clinically applicable.
