Examination Of The Surface Changes After Removal Of The Implant

Objective:

The aim of this study is to determine whether there will be any surface changes on applied bone and implant structure after removal of screwed implant.

Method:

In this study 6 pieces of hydroxyapatite-coated implants from three different manufacturer (A, B, and C) and D1 quality bovine bone (tibia) were used. The implant sockets were prepared with each system’s blades under saline irrigation. A, B, and C implants were screwed to the prepared sockets and they were removed after obtaining the primary stabilization. The bone surface before and after the implant application and the used and unused A,B,C implants were examined under the scanning electron microscope (SEM) with different magnifications.

Result:

After the removal of A, B, and C implants, the bone and screw structure were deteriorated. Although, the vertical grooves in the design collected the bone particles to the examined region, no impingement was observed. The surface of the unused A implant was found to be inhomogeneous.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, for the D1 quality bone implant applications, the type of the surface coating is also important at self-tapping stage. Since the self-tapping application changes the implant coating surface mechanically for this type of bones. Tap blade may be necessary to protect the surface properties of the implant. If the implant needs to be removed after the screwing, for the replacement it would be better to use one size larger implant for the primary stabilization.
