Long Term Adhesion of RelyXTM Ultimate to Titanium

Objective: This study investigated long term adhesion performance of RelyXTM Ultimate to titanium.

Method: Materials tested were RelyX Ultimate in combination with ScotchbondTM Universal Adhesive (SBU) both from 3M ESPE.

Shear bond strength (SBS) was tested on titanium (grade 2) slides (25x10x2mm). Stainless steel rods (4.0mm diameter, 2 mm height) were cemented using RelyXTM Ultimate in combination with ScotchbondTM Universal Adhesive. Titanium was pretreated according to manufacturer’s instruction by sandblasting (alumina particles 50µm). SBU was applied for 20 sec and gently air dried for 5 sec. Stainless steel rods were cemented under pressure (20 g/mm2) onto titanium slides and cured for 10 min at 36°C. Excess was removed using a probe and remaining cement was covered with glycerin gel (AIRBLOCKTM, Dentsply). Then loading weight and glycerin gel were removed. Prepared specimens were stored for 24h at 36°C and 100% relative humidity. SBS was measured after 24h (n=6). Additional specimens were stored in water at 36°C for artificial ageing and SBS was measured after 3 months (3m), 6m  and 12m (each group n=6). SBS was measured using a universal testing machine (Zwick Z010, crosshead speed: 0.75 mm/min).

Data obtained were analyzed using Multiple Range Test (Fisher’s LSD; p<0.05).

Result: see table. Values marked with the same superscript characters are not statistically different.

Conclusion: The adhesive resin cement RelyXTM Ultimate shows in combination with SBU constantly high adhesion performance to titanium even after artificial ageing up to one year in the self-cure mode. The excellent performance in the self cure mode is a key feature for successful cementation of metal based restorations including e.g. titanium implants.
