Educational Challenges the Digital Dentistry Era

In spite of the fact that the first attempts to manufacture dental restorations with the use of digital techniques like CAD-CAM are already more than 25 years old, digital procedures to take over the dentists clinical tasks are just coming. An exciting new area of technology comes available for the dentist of which digital impression taking by intra-oral scanning is one of the first issues. Despite the exciting advantages one should realize that digital techniques like Intra-oral requires other competencies than the conventional techniques. For instance a good hand-eye coordination is required for some intra-oral scanners. Also clinical procedures have to be adapted to make an optimal use of these new technologies. In this lecture first experiences with teaching young students and dentists to learn intra-oral scanning with the Lava-chairside oral scanner will be shared.
