Bonding Effectiveness of Adhesive Luting Agents to Dentin

Objectives: To evaluate the shear bond strength (SBS) of resin luting agents with different adhesive systems to dentin.

Materials and Methods: Seventy-two extracted human molars were ground flat exposing the dentin surfaces and were randomly divided into six groups according to the resin luting agents and adhesive systems (n=12 per group). Group A: Panavia F 2.0 / Panavia F 2.0 ED Primer II (Kuraray), Group B: Panavia F 2.0 /Clearfil Protect Bond (Kuraray), Group C: Panavia F 2.0 / Clearfil DC Bond (Kuraray), Group D: Rely X ARC/ Adper Single Bond 2 (3M/ESPE), Group E: Rely X U100 (3M/ESPE), Group F: Clearfil APX / Clearfil SE Bond (Kuraray). All adhesive materials were applied to dentin surfaces strictly following manufacturers' instructions using a silicon mold. The bonded specimens were stored for 24 h in distilled water at 37 0C and then thermocyled (2000×, 5/55 °C, dwelling time of 30s). SBS test was performed using universal test machine at a crosshead speed of 0.5mm/min. Failure modes were determined under a stereomicroscope. The mean SBS of each group was calculated and the results were subjected to Kruskal Wallis test. Significance was set as p< 0.05. Results:SBS mean values (MPa) for the groups were A: 32.24; B: 61.99; C: 74.12; D: 34.99; E: 17.88; F: 57.07 respectively. There were significant differences between groups (p= 0.003). Group E exhibited significantly lower SBS value than other groups (p< 0.05) except for Group A and D (p>0.05). Failure modes in GroupE were mainly adhesive. In the other groups they were mixed.

Conclusion: Adhesive luting systems with different chemical formulations and applications yielded significantly different bond strength to dentin. Resin luting agents used with adhesive systems may produce higher SBS than self adhesive resin cements.
