Therapy of periimplantitis - surgical and non-surgical treatments
Even though periimplant mucositis is shown to be manageable with supra-mucosal plaque control, the management of periimplantitis with non-surgical treatments appears to be limited. Therefore, surgical methods need to be applied around infected oral implants accompanied with regenerative procedures to enable bone regeneration and potential re-osseointegration. In sites with periimplantitis, post-operative healing is characterized with connective tissue healing and bone-implant re-osseointegration at the deepest site of the defect. No chemical or mechanical method for the decontamination of the contaminated implant surface appears to be promising to date. However, rough implant surfaces are shown to enhance implant re-osseointegration over machined implant surfaces. The evidence for surgical and non-surgical treatments in sites with periimplantitis will be critically discussed in the presentation.
