Methods: In line with a non-interventional clinical study 908 patients were monitored with a 4 % solution of articaine and an epinephrine concentration of 1:400.000 (3M ESPE) for routine dental treatment (conservative, surgical, prosthetic) with an expected duration of approximately 30 minutes.
Results: 29.19 % of the patients had risk factors in their history, mostly cardiovascular diseases (15.4% total) and nearly all had a pharmacotherapy. Treated teeth were mainly tested sensitive (81.17 %) preoperatively and prepared for fillings or crowns. In 98.35 % the planned treatment was finished. Reasons for incomplete treatment were mostly technical or temporal problems, only one patient complained of insufficient anaesthesia. The mean injected volume was 1.3 + 0.49 ml and the depth of anaesthesia in 84.22 % complete, in 15.78 % sufficient. A second injection was necessary in 3.74 % before and in 11.89 % during treatment. 15 patients (1.7 %) complained about side effects, 6 of them immediately, 9 over the telephone the next day. Symptoms were unspecific reactions to the injection or local complications.
Conclusions: The epinephrine reduced solution is a safe and effective drug for routine dental treatment.
