Influence of Luting Agents on the Microleakage of Fiber-Reinforced Posts
Objective: The aim of the study was to assess the microleakage of different adhesive luting systems when used for fiber post luting to root canal dentin. Materials and Methods: Forty non-carious, single rooted mandibular human premolars with straight root canals were prepared using a stepback technique and obturated with gutta-percha using lateral condensation and then were randomly divided in four groups and restored using a glass fiber post (Glassix; Harald Nordin SA, Chailly-Montreux, Switzerland) and following luting agents: Group1-All Bond 3/Duo-Link (Bisco), Group 2-Rely X Unicem (3M ESPE), Group 3- Panavia F 2.0 ED primer II /Panavia F 2.0 (Kuraray) Group 4- One Step Plus/ Duo-Link (Bisco, Inc). After the cementation procedure, samples were stored in distilled water for 30 days. Specimens were then thermo-cycled (5°C-55°, 30s,1000 cycles), coated with nail varnish and immersed in basic fuchsin (24h,37°C). The teeth were cut horizontally into three consecutive sections: apical (A), middle (M) and coronal (C). Each section was digitally photographed from the occlusal direction under a stereomicroscope. The images were transferred to a PC and stored in TIFF format. For each image, dye penetration was estimated as the ratio of basic fuchsin infiltrated surface divided by total dentin surfaces. The data were statistically analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U and Wilcoxon Signed Ranks tests. Significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: All groups showed considerable leakage at the sections evaluated however there were no significant differences between adhesive luting systems (p>0.05). In Panavia F group, coronal section exhibited statistically significant higher microleakage than other sections (p<0.05) however in the remaining groups, no statistically significant difference was found between sections. Conclusion: Within the limitation of this study, it can be concluded that different luting agents didn't exhibite any difference in reducing microleakage for fiber post luting to root canal dentin.
