Effectiveness of Various Dentine Bonding Systems for Dentine Tubule Occlusion

Objectives: It was the aim of this study to investigate the effectiveness of various dentine bonding systems to occlude dentine tubules in vitro.
Methods: Two hundred dentine discs were prepared from extracted teeth and divided into 25 groups of ten teeth. Dentine bonding systems were applied according to the manufacturer instructions. The following materials were tested: MDP Bond (1 ), Gluma (2), Clinpro Varnish XT (3) and Scotchbond (4), Futurabond (5), Fuji Triage (6), Telio CS (7) and Adhese Universal (8). Twenty specimens of each boning system were then thermocycled for 5000 cycles at 5 and 55 °C. Then, a tooth brushing time of two and six months was simulated. Surface roughness was determined before and after each tooth brushing cycle. The discs were immersed into AgNO3 solution and silver penetration was studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Penetration depth was analyzed statistically using non-parametric tests.
Results: Materials 1, 2 5 and 6 showed no changes of the surface roughness after thermocycling and tooth brushing. In material 2 and 4 surface roughness decreased significantly compared to T0 after thermocycling and 2 months tooth brushing and increased significantly in material 2 after 6 months tooth brushing simulation. In material 4 the surface roughness remained significantly lower compared to T0 after 6 months tooth brushing. EDS analysis demonstrated a total occlusion in materials 1 and 5 immediately after application of the bonding material The highest leakage was found in material 7. All other materials showed moderate leakage. A statistical significant difference before and after thermocycling and 2 months tooth brushing simulation was found in materials 1 and 5 and after 6 months tooth brushing simulation in materials 1 and 8.
Conclusions: Only two materials occluded dentine tubules completely. Tooth brushing and thermocycling reduces dentine tubule occlusion.
