Oral Hygiene and Keratinized Tissues around Teeth and Implants

Abstract Body: Periodontal diseases are among the most prevalent diseases in humans, and the most advanced form, severe periodontitis, is considered as the 6th most prevalent disease, affecting 11.6% of the world population. One of the most relevant consequences of periodontitis progression is tooth loss, associated with relevant masticatory and aesthetic problems. Missing teeth are often replaced with dental implants; however, peri-implant diseases (which share many similarities with periodontal diseases, including the microbiological aetiology) are also highly prevalent, with an estimation of 43% for peri-implant mucositis and 22% for peri-implantitis.
Due to the relevant prevalence, and the destructive nature of both diseases, preventive strategies are crucial, both at a primary and secondary levels. Prevention is mainly based on supragingival biofilm control, which can be achieved by mechanical and chemical means. Professional care is also crucial for the primary and, specially, for the secondary prevention of both periodontal and peri-implant diseases.
The relevance of keratinized tissues around teeth has been discussed for decades. Maintaining a healthy periodontium can be a challenge in certain situations in which keratinized tissues are missing around teeth. In parallel, the importance of keratinized tissues around dental implants has been also extensively discussed, with some authors suggesting that the lack of keratinized tissues around implants may be a risk factor for peri-implantitis.
Therefore, adequate preventive measures have to be establish to maintain periodontal and peri-implant health, and these could be especially relevant for teeth or implant with no, or limited, keratinized tissues around them.
