Influence of Polishing Systems on Color Stability and Microhardness of Resin Composites

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of polishing systems on color stability (ΔE) and surface microhardness (HV) of nanofilled [Filtek Ultimate, 3M ESPE;(FU)], microhybrid [Gaenial, GC;(G)], nanoceramic [CeramX, Dentsply;(CX)] and nanohybrid [Essentia, GC;(ES)] composites over one week staining.
Methods: 80 composite discs (n=20), 10mm in diameter and 2mm in thickness were polymerized from top and bottom surfaces (Demi Ultra; Kerr) and stored in distilled water at 37oC for 24 hours. Both surfaces of the specimens were pre-roughened with 320-grit SIC papers. Then the specimens were randomly divided into two groups according to the polishing systems used (Sof-Lex Discs,SD; 3M ESPE and Sof-Lex Spirals, SS; 3M ESPE). Initial ΔE of the specimens were evaluated with a spectrophotometer (Minolta CM- 2600d), while initial HV with a microhardness tester (Shimadzu). The specimens in each polishing group were randomly divided into two subgroups according to red wine (RW; n:10), and artificial saliva (C; n:10). Control groups (C) were aged in artificial saliva at 37oC while experimental groups were immersed in red wine for 1-hour daily and stored in artificial saliva at 37oC. ΔE and HV evaluations were performed after 1-week. ΔE and HV data were analyzed by three-way ANOVA and Tukey’s multiple comparison tests (p<0.05).
Results: Regarding ΔE and HV, there were no significant differences between SD and SS groups for all types of resin composites (p>0.05). All the tested materials showed significant HV reduction and increase in ΔE in RW and C groups (p<0.05) while RW yielded higher HV reduction and higher ΔE than C (p<0.05). In terms of ΔE, ES showed the highest increase and CX showed the lowest increase in both RW and C groups (p<0.05). Regarding HV, FU showed the highest HV decrease in both RW and C groups (p<0.05).
Conclusions: Sof-Lex spirals seems to be as effective as the gold standard Sof-Lex discs for polishing different type of resin composites
