How Resveratrol Addition Affects Adhesion Strength?

Objectives: Resveratrol (RES) is a polyphenolic antioxidant which has protective effect against dentin bonding agent-induced cytotoxicity. RES addition into the dentin bonding agents reduces oxidative stress, ROS production and DNA damage. The aim of this in vitro study is to investigate the influence of RES addition to four different dentin bonding agents on the microtensile bond strength (μTBS).
Methods: Human extracted third molars were used (n=7 for each group). The adhesive systems (G-aenial Bond- GC, Optibond All in One- Kerr, Gluma Self Etch- Heraeus Kulzer, Clearfil S3 Bond- Kuraray) with or without 0.5 μM RES addition were applied on dentin surfaces. A composite build-up was constructed. Then the specimens were sectioned into multiple beams with the non-trimming version of the microtensile test and subjected to microtensile forces. The data of μTBS were analyzed by ANOVA and Bonferroni test.
Results: RES addition did not cause any significant differences regarding the μTBS values. μTBS values of Optibond All in One was similar to that of Clearfil S3 Bond, regardless of the RES addition. Similarly, no significant difference was found between G-aenial Bond and Gluma Self Etch. The highest μTBS values were depicted in Optibond All in One and Clearfil S3 Bond while the lowest μTBS values were found in G-aenial Bond and Gluma Self Etch (p<0.001).
Conclusions: RES addition may improve the biocompatibility without causing a negative influence on μTBS of dentin bonding agents. Further studies are necessary to investigate the effects on adhesive durability in long term of RES addition to adhesive systems.
