Bonding effectiveness of a new universal adhesive to bur-cut dentin

Objectives: To measure the micro-tensile bond strength (µTBS) durability of a newly released universal dental adhesive to flat but-cut dentin
Methods: The newly released universal adhesive Clearfil Universal Bond Quick (C-UBq; Kuraray Noritake) was investigated with ScotchBond Universal (SBU; 3M) and the 2-step self-etch (SE) adhesive Clearfil SE Bond 2 (C-SE2; Kuraray Noritake) serving as controls; all contain 10-MDP as functional monomer. A split-tooth design was applied with each adhesive applied in an etch&rinse (E&R) mode on one tooth half versus a SE mode on the corresponding tooth half. All adhesives were applied according to the respective manufacturer’s instructions, except for C-UBq which was not only applied according to the manufacturer’s instructions (“applying in rubbing motion without waiting”) but also with a 20-sec rubbing action (C-UBq_Rub), and except for C-SE2 which was also applied in E&R mode. The µTBS of half of the specimens was measured upon 1-week storage in distilled water at 37oC and upon 6-month storage for the remaining half. Failure analysis was conducted using light microscopy and SEM. Data were statistically analyzed using 3-way ANOVA (p<.05) followed by Tukey multiple comparison test.
Results: The µTBS data are presented in the Table [mean±SD in MPa (ptf/n)]. Most adhesives investigated performed statistically not significantly different in terms of µTBS, with the highest µTBS being recorded for C-UBq_Rub and C-SE2, both when applied in E&R mode. While for 5 out of the 8 experimental groups, though mostly not statistically significant, the mean µTBS decreased upon aging, it remained nearly equal or even increased for the remaining 3 experimental groups; in particular the 2-step self-etch adhesive C-SE2 revealed the highest ‘aged’ µTBS.
Conclusions: The new universal adhesive generally did not underperform as compared to the control adhesives, when applied either in an etch&rinse or self-etch mode.
