Bone Tissue Responses to Zirconia Implants Modified by Biomimetic Coating
Objectives: The aim of the present study was to modify the Zirconia implants (White Implants®, White Implants Development Corp, Amsterdam, The Netherlands) with biomimetic calcium phosphate coating incorporating BMP2 and to investigate the histological behavior (osseointegration) of the Zirconia implants with modified surfaces.
Methods: White Implants® coated by biomimetic octa-calcium phosphate (OCP) coating, with and without the incorporation of BMP2 (Inc.BMP2 group, OCP group, respectively), were prepared. Original White Implants® served as control group. The surface characterization of the coating were observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Six beagle dogs (n = 6 animals per group) received the three groups of implants in the mandibles 1 month after extraction of the four premolars. 3 months after implantation, block sections, each containing one implant and surrounding tissues, were harvested from the mandibles, embedded in methylmethacrylate and stained with McNeal’s tetrachrome. Histomorphometrical analysis with regard to peri-implant bone density (bone volume percentage, %BV) and bone to implant contact percentage (%BIC) was performed. Two-way ANOVA and post-hoc test were used to analyze the differences among the groups. (α = 0.05)
Results: SEM and XRD showed that the biomimetic calcium phosphate coating was formed on the surface of the Zirconia successfully. Histomorphometrical analysis showed direct osseous integration for all the three groups of implants. The peri-implant bone density (%BV) in Inc.BMP2 group was significantly higher and that in control group (p<0.05). However, concerning %BIC, there was no significant difference among the three groups.
Conclusions: The results showed an improved peri-implant bone density in the Inc.BMP2 group, which indicating better osseointegration surrounding the Zirconia implants with biomimetic coating incorporating BMP2.
