Assessment of color changes in non-vital teeth with dental trauma
Objectives: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the color changes of non vital teeth with dental trauma, one year after the endodontic treatment was completed.
Methods: Color parameters L*, a*, b*, of 7 non vital central incisors (6 mandibular and 1 maxillary) of 7 consecutive subjects were evaluated using a dental spectrophotometer. All teeth presented loss of vitality due to dental trauma and no endodontic treatment. For each non vital tooth the same endodontic treatment protocol was performed: two appointments of cleaning and shaping and warm vertical condensation technique. Two color measurements were performed for each tooth: one - after the endodontic treatment was completed (baseline), and the second - one year after the first measurement. Differences in color parameters (ΔL*, Δa*, Δb*, ΔE*00), and whiteness index (WID) were calculated.
Results: Changes in L* (lightness), towards decreased values, were found in all non-vital teeth, with a mean value of DL = - 3,66. Either increasing or decreasing was recorded for chromatic parameters a*(red-green axis) and b*(yellow-blue axis). The whiteness index WID either increased (with a mean value of 2.82) for four teeth or decreased (mean value of -7,54) for the rest. All color differences DE00 exceeded the acceptability thresholds ( AT = 1.8), with a mean value of DE00= 3,64 units.
Conclusions: Within the limitations of our study, the following conclusions can be drawn:
Color parameter L* of non vital traumatized teeth displayed the most important and immediate change after endodontic treatment (towards decreased values). However, the variation of WID followed different trends, which will be discussed further. The color changes in all situations were above the acceptability threshold.
