Evaluation of sinus pathologies and radiographic findings of maxillary posterior teeth using CBCT and panoramic radiography

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between sinus pathologies between maxillary sinus floor and maxillary posterior teeth roots and to compare this correlation with panoramic radiography and cone-beam computerized tomography(CBCT).
Methods: Two hundred eighty five records of patients were retrospectively analyzed. One hundred eleven of the patients were men and one hundred seventy four were women. Treatment status of maxillary posterior teeth, maxillary sinus relation of 1710 roots and sinus pathologies were evaluated and classified. Correlations between the two radiographic techniques were statistically analyzed.Kruskal-Wallis, Chi-Square, Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney U tests were applied for statistical analysis. P values less than 0.05 were considered statistically significant.
Results: There were significant differences in the right and left sides of sinus pathology examinations in CBCT and panoramic radiography (p=0.000). More sinus pathology was detected on CBCT. CBCT had higher mean values of distance between maxillary sinus floor and maxillary posterior teeth roots than panoramic radiography.
Conclusions: The CBCT provides a better diagnosis of maxillary sinus pathology by its three dimensional nature and it gives more details than panoramic radiography.
