Investigation into course after postgraduate orthodontics program completion at NDUH

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the engagement in clinical orthodontic practice of graduate orthodontists of the postgraduate training program at Nippon Dental University Hospital (NDUH).
Methods: The survey participants were 35 graduates, excluding international students, who completed a term of the orthodontic training course of the postgraduate training program up to March 2016. The mean number of trainees per term, male-to-female ratio, current employment status, and presence or absence of a certified physician’s license were investigated.
Results: The mean number of trainees per term was 3.9, of whom 22.9% were males and 77.1% were females. Current employment statuses included employment at a university hospital division of orthodontics (48.6%), employment at a specialist orthodontic clinic (17.1%), a freelance orthodontist (17.1%), a general dental practitioner (2.9%), employment at a general dental clinic (2.9%), employment at a department of oral surgery (2.9%), employment at a department of oral rehabilitation (2.9%), studying on a postgraduate foundation course (2.9%), and unemployed (2.9%). Graduates who practiced only orthodontic treatment accounted for 82.9%, while those who practiced treatment other than orthodontics, both orthodontic treatment and general dental treatment, or no treatment at all accounted for 8.6%, 5.7% and 2.9%, respectively. Of those who met the conditions for acquiring a certified physician’s license, 94.4% had acquired such a license, of whom 76.5% had acquired their license from a training institution. No significant difference between males and females about the enrollment period at postgraduate training institutions after program.
Conclusions: The majority of those who completed postgraduate training were currently only practicing orthodontic treatment, and more than half of these graduates were continuing their practice at postgraduate training institutions. Most certified physicians had acquired their license while enrolled at a training institution, where it is considered easier to acquire a license than at other institutions.
