Combined use of Er:YSGG and 940 nm Diode lasers in non-surgical treatment of chronic periodontitis. A split-mouth, single-blind, randomized controlled trial.
Objectives: Despite the lasers have a history in dentistry, the combining effects of different wavelengths to enhance the success of periodontal treatment have not been studied much. The purpose of this study was to compare the clinically effectiveness of combined Er:YSGG and 940nm Diode laser in addition to non- surgical periodontal treatment. Methods: Systemically healthy 25 patients with chronic periodontitis were included in the study. All patients have been informed about the possible effects of laser assisted periodontal treatment methods used in this study. At baseline, 1 month and 3 months after treatment; plaque index, gingival index, periodontal probing depth (PPD) and clinical attachment level (CAL) were recorded After the initial clinical measurements oral hygiene instructions were given to the patient. After one week patients underwent 940 nm diode laser at the settings of 1W, CW to the randomly determined quadrants. After this process supragingival calculus removal was done and patients were recalled after 7 days. In the second appointment 1,5W, CW diode laser was applied to the quadrants randomly determined before. This was followed by conventional subgingival debridement. Finally ErCr:YSGG laser at the settings of 30Hz 1,5W with %40 air and %60 water. After laser assisted periodontal therapy, clinical parameters were evaluated in the first and third month. Results: The clinical parameters had significantly improved for both sites after treatment. There were statistically significant differences between the Laser and Control in PPD, and CAL (P< 0.05). Conclusions: This study suggests that combined use of Er:YSGG and Diode Lasers may positively effect the clinical parameter on a short-term basis. Further; multicentre long-term studies are needed to enhance our understanding of the exact effect of combined use of lasers.
