Survey on use of a regional diagnostic oral microbiology laboratory

Objective: The use of diagnostic microbiology facilities is important in determining the diagnosis of a number of oral diseases. Data generated from appropriate specimens can also inform empiric antimicrobial prescribing. The value of oral microbiology diagnostic facilities depends on the quantity and quality of specimens submitted to the diagnostic facility. The aim of this study was to analyse the use of a diagnostic oral microbiology facility, the views of the users and barriers to use of diagnostic microbiology facilities.

Methods: A retrospective review of specimens submitted to Glasgow Dental Hospital microbiology laboratory was undertaken for the period 2007-2008. All users that had submitted specimens to the laboratory over this period were sent a questionnaire on the use of the diagnostic oral microbiology laboratory.

Results: During 2007 -2008 there were 978 specimens submitted from departments within the Dental Hospital and 28 specimens submitted from general dental practitioners (gdp's). Responses were available from 18/31 users from the dental school and 18/25 from gdp's. Information regarding the use of the laboratory services was agreeable for 94% of hospital users and 67% of gdp's. The turnaround times for producing results was agreeable for 100% of hospital users and 54% of gdp's. The information contained within the laboratory reports was useful for 100% of hospital users and gdp's. The repertoire of tests available was satisfactory for 100% of hospital users and gdp's. Barriers to the use of the diagnostic facilities by gdp's was access to appropriate transportation for specimens.

Conclusion: There was a high level of satisfaction with the diagnostic oral microbiology facilities. However, the number of gdp's using the service is relatively small and more information could be supplied to encourage a greater use of the facilities. Methods to facilitate transportation of specimens would also enhance uptake of diagnostic microbiology services.
