Effect of a waterline disinfectant on bond strengths of panavia

Objective: The objective of this in vitro study was to investigate the effect of a current proprietary dental unit waterline disinfectant, ‘Alpron mint', on shear bond strengths between Panavia 21 (a proprietary resin luting cement) and enamel and dentine. Methods: Eighty-eight extracted human premolar teeth were ground to provide flat tooth surfaces in enamel (N=44) or dentine (N=44). Half the specimens in each group were irrigated with an Alpron mint solution and the other half with distilled water (control); following this, sandblasted nickel chrome cylinders were bonded to the tooth surfaces using Panavia 21 resin luting cement. Shear bond strength was measured using an Instron Universal Testing Machine and statistical analysis of the results was performed using a two way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and independent samples t-tests. Results: The results indicated that shear bond strengths were slightly higher for both enamel and dentine, when Alpron mint had been used as the irrigant, compared with distilled water; however, this difference was not significant (P = 0.245). A significant difference (P<0.05) was however found between mean shear bond strengths of Panavia 21 to enamel compared with those to dentine (18.1MPa compared with 6.0MPa respectively). The majority of the representative specimens observed under the scanning electron microscope (SEM) appeared to show failure of a cohesive nature of the cement in close proximity to the tooth/cement interface. Conclusion: Use of the dental unit waterline disinfectant Alpron did not effect the shear bond strengths between Panavia 21 and enamel and dentine.
