Imaging for Glossectomy and Neck Dissection

OBJECTIVES: Carcinoma of tongue has a high propensity for regional metastases in the neck. Current practice suggests hemiglossectomy combined with neck dissection offers the best chance of cure. The objective of this study was to review the investigation, management and clinical outcome following partial glossectomy/neck dissection for a series of patients with T1 and T2 tongue cancers.

METHODS: A retrospective review of 10 consecutive tongue cancer patients, presenting to the MaxilloFacial Unit at Newcastle upon Tyne and treated by the same operator(PJT) following multi-disciplinary assessment was carried out. Histo-pathological data was compared with pre-operative clinical examination and CT imaging to determine the efficacy of pre-surgical assessment.

RESULTS: 5 male and 5 female patients (age range 54-75yrs) underwent partial glossectomy and, primarily, ipsilateral neck dissection for Stage I or II tongue cancer. Details of all pre-operative assessments will be presented and compared with post-surgical histo-pathology.

CONCLUSIONS: The efficacy of clinical examination, FNA techniques and CT imaging will be discussed and suggestions for future clinical management made.
