Biopsicossocial aspects and carie experence in children with cardiac deseases attended in the Cardiac National Institute
Congenital heart deseases represent one of the most commom developmental anomalies among children and interfere in oral health condition. The aim of this study was to analyse the epidemiologic profile of children from 3 to 5 years of age from the Dentistry Service of INC (Ministério da Saúde). Data were collected from the dental files and were processed in EPI-INFO 6.0. The sample comprised 127 children and mother`s mean age was 31,2 years and the father´s was 33,9 years. In relation to their educational level, 60% of the mothers and 44% of the fathers had studied as far as elementary level, however 31% of the files don`t contain this information. The most frequent cardiac deseases were Tetralogy of Fallot, Interventricular comunication, Interatrial comunication and 80% presented risk to develop infeccious endocarditis. The mean of ceod was 5,4 and 76,4% of the children had at least one caries lesion. 75,2 % had been under cardiac sugery and 40 % showed behavior problems. It was found a significant relationship between the parents educatinal level and awarness of the influence of oral condition on cardiac desease (qui-square test < 0,01).It could be concluded that this population showed a high level of dental caries wich can be explained by the medical history, poor social and economic condition and behavior problems.
