Antimicrobial Action of Chlorhexidine Gel Associated to Calcium Hydroxide
Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of endodontic medicaments on stumps of C. albicans. Methods: The medicaments were tested according to dilution methodology in Petri plates, and they were divided in five groups: G1) 2% chlorhexidine gel (CHX-gel), G2) CHX-gel + calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2), in equal proportions; G3) natrozol; G4) 2% chlorhexidine solution (CHX-solution); G5) Ca(OH)2. Initially, all medicaments were diluted in 20 mL of tap water. For each group, it was prepared nine Petri plates containing Sabouraud Dextrose ágar and sequential concentrations of the medicaments. After, suspensions containing 1000000 cels/mL of 22 stumps of C. albicans were prepared and sowed in the plates with a Steers inoculador. The experiment was performed in duplicate and it was included two plates of control growth. The plates were incubated to 37ºC by 24 h and the minimal fungicidal concentration was verified (MFC). Results: The results demonstrated that in G1 (2%CHX-gel), MFC was 0,0063% for all stumps; in G2 (CLX-gel + Ca(OH)2), MFC was 0,0015% (CLX-gel) + 0,07% (Ca(OH)2) for all stumps; G3 (natrozol), did not demonstrate fungicidal action; G4 (2%CHX-solution), MFC was 0,0063%; G5 (Ca(OH)2), MFC was 0,32% for all stumps. Conclusion: It was verified that the association of 2% CHX-gel + Ca(OH)2 was the medicament that presented the more effective fungicidal action on stumps of C. albicans in a smaller concentration, concluding that, among the medicaments tested, this is the most effective medication.
