Caries Risk: Comparison Between Asthmatic and Non-Asthmatic Children and Teenagers

Objectives: The aim of this work was to compare the caries risk between asthmatic and non-asthmatic children and teenages, and verify the sensitivity of S.mutans strains isolated from mouthrinses and dentifrices. Methods: Samples of saliva were collected from 44 individuals (20 asthmatic and 24 non-asthmatic) about 5 to 13 years old. Samples were seeded in SB20 seriated, tested by decimal dilution technique, and incubated by 72h at 37ºC in microaerophilia. Based on the colony morphology, identification and counting were accomplished by a stereoscopic microscope. Twenty-nine S.mutans and 2 S.sobrinus yeasts were isolated from 44 samples. S.mutans yeasts were tested by disk diffusion method to compare its sensitivity to the mouthrinses: Periogard™, Malvona™, Plax™, and Malvatricin-quinolona™, and the dentifrices Malvatricin anti-placa™, Sorriso herbal™, and Close-up liquid fresh™). Caries risk were calculated according to Klock & Krasse (1979). Comparison of caries risk among the groups tested was accomplished by Kruskall-Wallis statistical test. Results: Variation of cfu number of S.mutans/mL saliva - asthmatic group (2.0 x 101 to 2.3x106) showed no difference of the control group (2.0 x 101 to 2.6 x 106) as well as no significant differences of caries risk were showed in that groups [(H)=3.3455, p(H0)=6.74%]. All isolated strains presented sensitivity to the tested mouthrinses and dentifrices. Conclusions: There were no significantly differences of caries risk or sensitivity of the isolated yeasts in the tested mouthrinses, between asthmatic and non-asthmatic children and teenages
