Emergency attention, curative and preventive care in child dentistry

Created in the year 2003 within the Child and Social Dentistry Department of the Dental School of the Federal University of Juiz de Fora, the program is based in studentxs and teacherxs actions. Objectives:it aims at contributing for the formation of granted students, keeping the health of patients which have finished treatment in the child dental health disciplines of the School, and avoiding the reoccurrence of oral diseases. Methods:for that, emergency, curative and preventive care is offered. The frequency of the patients recalls depends not only on their past caries experience but also in their parents response to the recommendations received on dietary habits, oral hygiene, and rational use of fluoride. Results:in the period of 9 months, 30 children in need of emergency care, and 172 in need of maintenance, within the ages of 4 and 13,were treated. Data showed that among maintenance patients, 13(7,5%) needed restorative care, 131(76,2%) continued in maintenance, 10(5,8%) could not be found, and 18(10,5%) did not attend the apppointment. Conclusions:given this, it was concluded that the preventive maintenance phase is effective, hence the need for more parentxs awareness of their co-responsibility for success. It was also noticied that such training contributed for the holistic formation of students aware of the reality of tfe assisted community. (Supported by PROGRAD/UFJF)
