Evaluation of percutaneous injuries frequency occurred with dental students - UNIT

Objective: Considering the importance of the Biosafety in the Dentistry, the aim of this study was to detect the frequency of percutaneous injuries among 5º and 9º period in the dental school at Centro Universitário do Triângulo – Uberlândia/MG. Methods: For such, a questionnaire with 14 questions was applied individually to 165 students. Results: After the tabulations of the data, it was got the following results: 30 students (18,18%) told to have suffered percutaneous injuries in some period of the course. 15 out of 30 students have hurt themselves during clinical or surgical procedures and the accidents with injection were the most frequent (10 out of 30 students). Among the victims, 5 students (16,66%) have not made anything after the occurrence and 10 students (33,33%) washed the wound with water and soap. In relation to the use of EPI (Equipment of Protection Individual), only 36.66% (11 students) used correctly it at the moment of the accident and still, 56.66% (17 students) were not with the scheme vaccine against Hepatitis B complete. Through the test Qui-square, the value of χ2 = 371,72 indicated there were significant differences between the compared frequencies, the high values were relative to the students that have not suffered any accident. Conclusion: According to numerical analysis it was concluded there was a great frequency of percutaneous injuries and these students need to know more about the use of EPI, as well as the steps to be taken after the accident and the importance of being vaccinated against Hepatitis B.
