Aesthetic and Cephalometric Standard Norm: Multidisciplinary Views to Orthodontic Diagnosis

Difficulties can be observed in the teaching and the research process of Orthodontics when methods of exposition, techniques and general norms are based only in technical paradigms. However, others knowledge areas like Anthropology, Social Sciences, Communication and Philosophy must be present in the learning process. Can cephalometric norm and beauty become related? Objectives: The present study aimed to investigate the relations between the harmony and balance of functional technical acquaintance and the aesthetic desire of the individuals by facial analysis in 28 Brazilian individuals (photographic models) with harmony and dentofacial equilibrium that were not treated orthodontically. Methods: Standardized photographs and x-rays were taken of the individuals and had been submitted to statistical analysis using the Student T test when compared with the standard cephalometric norm. Results: The measures taken revealed deviation of the standardized cephalometric norm and it showed impracticable statistically for diagnosis in these individuals. Conclusions: The trustworthiness of the Cephalometric Analysis was placed under question, because does not show a relationship with the analysis of clinical evidence of normality, equilibrium, and aesthetic found in the sample. It shows the lack of important information necessary to indicate the need for aesthetic corrections in the individual who has been seeking a resolution for his Orthodontics appearance problem.
