Analysis of mechanical properties of die and resin-reinforced dental stone

The mechanical properties of casts and dies routinely made are relevant for contour and fit of indirect restorations, and these influence the patients' esthetics and function. Objectives: This study evaluated 11 commercially available type-IV and type-V die materials and 1 commercially available resin-reinforced stone for surface roughness, dimensional change, hardness and fracture resistance. Methods: The impression was made from a stainless steel pattern. Six specimens were made for each group. A profilometer was used for surface roughness analysis (MYTUTOIO SJ 201); dimensional change was evaluated through digital images; microhardness was measured using a micro hardness tester (SHIMADZU) and the fracture resistance was measured using an universal testing machine (Instron). Results: The results were submitted to statistical analysis (Tukey 5%). Velmix, Exadur and Rock Plus showed the best values for surface roughness (Ra=0.15µm). Rock Plus presented the lowest dimensional change, Exadur exhibited the highest mean microhardness and Vel-mix presented the highest fracture resistance. Conclusions: Therefore, it was observed that all products showed satisfactory results regarding the mechanical properties. However, the use of materials with higher accuracy demands procedures with higher quality and precision.
