Evaluation of .04 and .06 Gutta-Percha in Flattened Root Canals

Objective: This study evaluated the degree of adaptation of .04 and .06 gutta-percha primary filling points at the apical and middle thirds of the root canals of mesio-distally flattened teeth after sealing. Methods: Twenty mandibular incisors were randomly divided into two groups: group I – 10 teeth were prepared up to a taper .04 # 30 instrument; group II – 10 teeth were prepared up to a taper .06 # 30 instrument. After sealing of the root canal with a primary cone of compatible number and taper to the instrument, the root was cut transversally, specimens were analyzed with an optic microscope (40X) and photographs were taken. The photographs were analyzed morphometrically with a grid specially made for computer use. The root canal area filled with gutta-percha, sealer and empty spaces were quantified. Results: Data were submitted to statistical analysis Chocran that showed no significant statistical difference (p>0.05) between the groups in terms of adaptation in the thirds studied. Conclusion: We conclude that the .04 and .06 primary gutta-percha points do not adapt adequately in mesio-distally flattened canals after root canal preparation with .04 and .06 rotary instruments, respectively.
