Evaluation of avulsion cases at the Center of Dental Traumatism

Dental traumatic injuries observed in children and adolescents, especially those that involve the anterior teeth have unfavorable effects on both function and esthetics, affecting their self-esteem as well as interfering over their personal success and behavior. It must be noted that children are most frequently associated with such incidents, which become less common within adults. Dental avulsions represent clinical situations, which the treatment performed is constantly unsuccessful, partly because of the lack of immediate care and partly because of a doubtful prognostic. Objectives: the purpose of this study was to evaluate the cases of dental avulsion treated at the Center of Dental Traumatism of the Dental School of Piracicaba, State University of Campinas, Piracicaba,SP, during the period of 2000-2003. Methods: seventy-one patients were examined (59% men; and 41% women), between the ages of 7 and 50, representing a total of 152 teeth involved. The distribution of cases according to age was the following: 43,66% (<=4 years), 45,07% (15-25 years) and 11,27% (<=6 years). Results:it was possible to observe that 73 of the 152 teeth traumatized were unable to be reimplanted. There was also no statistical difference between the distributions of teeth traumatized during the studied period (p<0.05/ chi-square). Conclusions: according to our results, it is possible to conclude that there is a high incidence of dental avulsions and a center of dental trauma is of great importance for the treatment of such accidents.
