Do Imbalanced Dentures Conduct to Malignant Lesions? A Histopathological Study

Objectives: The aim of this study was to verify the association of inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia (IFH) with malignant transformation by a retrospective histopathological study.

Methods: An epidemiologic assessment of all IFH histopathologically diagnosed cases from the Department of Oral Pathology of the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, during the period of 1991 to 2003 was realized. Clinical and histopathological characteristics were evaluated and a descriptive analysis was performed.

Results: In the histopathogical evaluation of the 315 cases of IFH, the major characteristics were hyperparakeratosis (67%), acanthosis (87%), ulceration (35%), moderate chronic inflammatory infiltrate (52%), pseudoepitheliomatosis hyperplasia (57%), exocytosis (79%) and mild epithelial dysplasia (5%). No cases of moderate or severe epithelial dysplasia were found and all cases of mild dysplasia were associated to severe exocytosis. Significant statistics correlations were revealed between dysplasia and exocytosis (p=0.04) but not between dysplasia and the inflammatory infiltrate level (p=0.87).

Conclusion: The present study did not verify any case of malignant transformation associated with IFH.
