Comparative study of bone repair in hypertensive and normotensive rats

The systemic arterial hypertension has been related with bone tissue modifications, although the influence of this pathology on bone repair is not known. Objective: Evaluate and compare the behavior of bone tissue during the healing process in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and normotensive Wistar. Methods: A bone defect (2mm in diameter) was created in the left femur of 24 SHR e 24 Wistar (12 males and 12 females in each group). The animals were divided into two groups and sacrificed seven and 21 days after the surgical procedure. After the routine laboratorial processing, histomorphological and histometric analyses were carried out and the results were submitted to ANOVA (5%). Results: Histologically, there were similar characteristics between males and females, in each group. After seven days, all groups presented irregular bone trabeculae. The periosteals osteoblasts were flattened in SHR, while in normotensive animals these cells presented a cubic format. After 21 days, the bone defect of all specimens had a linear close in all superficial extension, although SHR presented flattened osteoblasts surrounding bone trabeculae, while normotensive showed cubic osteoblasts. Statistical differences were observed between normotensive and hypertensive rats, as well as between the observation periods, although no difference between males and females was detected. Conclusion: At seven and 21 days after the surgical procedure, the bone repair in SHR was qualitative and quantitatively more expressive than in normotensive, although there were not differences between males and females from the same group.
