Biocompatibility Evaluation of Bioceramic and Biodegradable Polymers Composites

Objectives: The objective of the present work was to evaluate the biocompatibility of composites of biodegradable polymers (PLA, PLGA) in a bioceramic scaffold (BC). Methods:The test groups were established as PLA:BC and PLGA:BC, and control groups as BC, PLA, PLGA. It were performed direct contact test, evaluating the citotoxicity on fibroblasts L-929 in vitro and biocompatility test by macroscopic and microscopic analyses on outbread swiss mice 1, 7, 13, 21, 28 and 56 days after subcutaneus implantation. This research was aproved by UFMG Ethics Committee. Results:It was verified low citotoxicity in vitro of the composites PLA:BC and PLGA:BC when compared to the controls. It was observed a low to moderate inflammatory response for most of the groups. The tissue showed normal pattern at the 28th day for all the groups. Additionaly, the images have suggested a macroscopical and microscopical angiogeneses on a PLA control tablet, as well as on a PLA:BC tablet by SEM, 56 days post-implantation. The SEM also allowed to observe the adsorption of cells starting from the first day of implantation and a larger speed of degradation of the composites containing PLGA. Conclusions:It is possible to conclude that the composites were biocompatible, promising possible application for bone tissue engeneering, and PLA:BC obtained the greater biological response when compared to PLGA:BC and the controls.
