Evaluation face asymmetry in individuals with posterior crossbites

The objective: of this work was to evaluate face asymmetry in individuals with posterior crossbite with the help of frontal pictures. Forty-four individuals in the mixed dentition phase were evaluated, being: group A-22 individuals with normal occlusion in transversal direction, and group B-22 individuals with posterior crossbite. According to the used method: it was verified frequencies and types of crossbites. Frontal photographs were done with the objective of verifying that if there was any difference in between these two groups through traces of the eye level (interpupilar) and the mouth level (commissure line), and measure these angles in relation to the face milddle-line. From the results: it was verified in group B a greater incidence of unilateral crossbite (77,2%) than bilateral (22,7%),and functional (77,2%) than true (27,8%). As to the analysis of frontal pictures, it was verified that there is greater correlation between the angle of the eye and the mouth (r = 0,7450) in the individuals of group A than those of the group B (r = 0,5260), although it was not detected any statistical difference between the average of the angle of the eye and the mouth on the face of the individuals of group B in relation to the ones of group A (p> 0,05).Conclusions: that the face asymmetry is not correlated to the posterior crossbite according to the applied methodology.
