Associated malformations in cleft lip and palate brazilian patients sample

In the present study, a hundred patients sample of Serviço de Defeitos de Face of Pontifícia Universidade Católica of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) was examined. Objectives: The objective was to look for associated malformations to cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P). Methods: The patients were appraised for the authors together with an experienced clinical geneticist. The patients were classified as: bearers of isolated CL/P; bearers of larger anomaly (associations, sequences, syndromes and chromosome abnormalities) associated to CL/P; or bearers of minor anomaly associated to CL/P. Results: Of hundred patients 55% belonged to masculine gender. The white patients were 96% of total sample. In 80% of cases, the clefts were isolated, while in 20% of cases CL/P were accompanied of at least one associated anomaly. In 8% the clefts were associated to larger anomalies (2 associations, 3 sequences, 2 syndromes and 1chromosome abnormalitie) and 12% of cases were associated to minor anomalies (28 anomalies in 12 patients). The anomalies of extremities and bone skeleton were significantly associated with total of minor anomalies (p <0,01). The clefts with lip and palate involvement were the most frequent in all diagnosis categories. In 57% of patients there wasn't presence of family antecedents. Conclusions: 1) The high frequence of associated malformations to CL/P (20% in this study) show the importance of every CL/P patient be evaluated by an experienced clinical geneticist. 2) The support to CL/P patients should be performed by teams of different types professionals.
