The inter-relation of nephropathy and the salivary flow

Nowadays, according to Brazilian Society of Nephrology, there are 55.000 patients that are suffering from Chronic Renal Failure who are undergoing hemodialysis three times per week, four hours per day. Objectives: Prove that these patients suffer from numerous systemic disturbances that give them a decreased salivary flow rate. Methods: This report has evaluated the volume of the stimulated salivary flow rate from 30 patients (18 to 74 years old), average age 45, all with chronic renal failure, 30 minutes before their hemodialysis section, who were afterwards compared to 30 other patients (20 to 64 years old), average age 45, who attempted in Joinville's University, Dentistry Department, all healthy patients and who had not taken any kind of medication in the last 3 months. Results: The tests have demonstrated salivary flow rates with an average of 0,60 ml/min of the patients with chronic renal failure, meaning hiposalivation. However, the control patients have presented an average of 1,53 ml/min, meaning normal salivary secretion. Conclusions: The results were analyzed statistically by the test-t method, demonstrating that statistically (p<0,01) the patients with chronic renal failure, who are undergoing hemodialysis, have a reduced flow rate when compared to subjects that aren't doing this kind of treatment.
