Age and Cement-Dentinal Thickness between Pulp Chamber and Furcation

The cement-dentinal thickness between the pulp chamber floor and the furcation zone presents anatomical differences, depending on whether the molars are superior or inferior and may be another variable to consider in the diffusion of bacterial toxins towards the furcation zone. OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of age on the cement-dentinal thickness between the pulp chamber and the furcation. METHOD: 40 first permanent molars divided into Group I: 20 upper molars (1PUM) and Group II: 20 lower (1PLM) were used, and according to age in Subgroups A: <25 years and B from 25 to 40 years. The samples were selected from a tooth storage, which belongs to the Endodontics area of ??the UNC School of Dentistry, kept in biosecurity conditions. Cameral accesses were performed with high speed and the axial walls of the pulp chamber were rectified with endo Z drills (Dentsply Maillefer). Subsequently, with diamond discs, the dental crown was sectioned at the level of the cement enamel junction, and the roots 2 mm from the furca. Finally, the thickness of cement-dentinal tissue between the cameral floor and the furca was measured, at different points, using a metal gauge (CLP1 Hu-Friedy, USA). The values ??of the maximum and minimum thickness of each of the teeth were recorded for the purpose of performing the statistical analysis. The two-way ANOVA test was applied and the limit of significance was at a value of p<0.05. RESULTS: The effect of the two variation factors was analyzed. When considering the age factor, the differences were not statistically significant (p>0.05). The maxillary factor also did not significantly influence dentin thickness values ??(p>0.05). CONCLUSION: The average thicknesses were similar in both jaws, however, the amplitude of the differences between the maximum and minimum dentin thickness values was greater in the young, which indicates the topographic variability in that group.
