Basic Clinical Trial of Histiocitosis in Pediatric Patients

Langerhans cells histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare disorder of unknown etiology, characterized by proliferation and accumulation of abnormal Langerhans cell in different organs. The prostaglandin and interleukin production is typical of this type of diseases. The aim of this study is to investigate the presence of PGE2 and IL-1 β in saliva of the different clinic subtypes of the disease, and evaluate if increase in production of cytokines in saliva may be considered as a risk marker for reactive disease.  One control group of healthy patients (G1) and one of affected children with LCH diagnosis (G2) that belongs to the Department of Oncohematology of Garrahan Hospital, and Clínicas Hospital, were evaluated with clinical and radiographic studies  This last group was classified in three subgroups: a) histiocytosis unisystemic unifocal b) unisystemic multifocal and c) multisystemic. Saliva samples were taken of both groups to determinate the presence and quantity of PGE2and IL-1 β.
Result: 4 patients of the unisystemic unifocal group (Ga) and 5 patients of multisystemic group (Gc), showed an increase of PGE2 and IL-1 β in saliva. The healthy patients bassal values was 0,4 ± 0.06 ng/ml for PGE2and 198±  30 pg/ml for IL-₁ β. A lineal correlation (α= 0,05) was founded between reactive disease patients of multisystemic group with the values of PGE2 and. IL-1 β.  We concluded that: the high values are related with the number of active focus and the multisystemic commitment; this may considerer that PGE2 and IL-1 β values in saliva as a biological marker for reactive disease.
