Effect of additional curing procedures on mechanical properties of composites resins.

Additional curing is frequently employed during the manufacturing of a restoration with indirect composite resin to enhance the properties of the polymerized composite resin. There are different kinds of devices that can be used for this purpose, some of them work with light and heat and others with heat and pressure. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of an additional curing procedure on the flexural strength of an indirect composite resin material.
Materials and Methods: 16 prismatic specimens of 2x2x25mm were made with Adoro (Ivoclar Vivadent). The composite resin was packed into a stainless steel ad-hoc device with a Teflon instrument, on top of it was placed a maylar strip and a glass on which an uniform and gentle pressure was applied in order to        minimize the exceeding material. Polymerization was activated with a halogen lamp Astralis 10 (Ivoclar-Vivadent) in four different points to ensure that the whole mass was reached by enough energy. Then specimens were divided in two groups: G1: no other activation was done G2: in addition to the photo activation, they were left in a light and heat device (Targis Power Up Grade) for 25 minutes. All specimens were polished with grit grinding paper and kept in distilled water at 37ºC for 24 hs. In order to determine the flexural strength a mechanical testing machine was used (Instron Mod 1011), to do the three-point test under compressive load (load increase regime 1mm per minute). Data was analyzed with t test. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences (P<0.01) between both groups, being the higher values those obtained in the groups treated with the additional curing device with an average of 69 MPa.
Additional curing procedures result in higher values of flexural strength of indirect composite Adoro.
