PEDIATRIC ORAL MEDICINE

A retrospective study was carried out with patients who were children and teenagers between 0 and 16 years old. They came to the Department of Oral Medicine of the University of Buenos Aires from 1991 to 2002. The pathologies diagnosed were grouped according to their etiology and they are described in relation to their frequency. 604 (N0 604) patients with a diagnosis of the pathology were admitted in the study. The results obtained were: Mucocele, 121 patients, corresponding to 20% of the sample and being the most frequent pathology, with a range of 3 months to 16 years old, an average of 9,67 and a medium average of 12. A semiological description of the tumor as an elementary injury was taken and it was classified according to its etiology with a total number of 58 patients, range of 8 months to 16 years and media 9,12. It corresponds to 13,41% of the sample. They were classified into: T. Simple Hyperplasic (N=44). T. True (N=14). The oral manifestations caused by viral infections were presented with different oral injuries, like vesicles that eroded in the case of the herpetic primo infection of the recurrent herpes and the zoster herpes. In the case of injuries produced by the HPV, they appear as wart-like swelling, vulgar warts, condyloma or like papule epithelial in the case of the Heck’s disease. Range: from 1 to 16 years old. Average: 9,38 medium: 8. This pathology corresponds to a 9,93% (N=60) of the total number of patients (N=604). The aphtaes were found in the fourth place in frequency as a pathology, (N=51). The injuries found were slight aphtaes, Sutton’s aphtaes and Riga Fede ulcer. Range: from 3 months to 16 years old. This paper presents the oral pathologies most frequently observed in children and teenagers in a significant sample of 604 patients. Mucocele was the most frequent pathology found.
