Factors affecting dental students’ evaluation in tooth preparation

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of method of grading (objective versus subjective), and level of expertise (junior versus senior staff) on tooth preparation evaluation in a pre-clinical prosthodontic practical examination set-up.

Method: Research included all the students enrolled in the Preclinical Fixed Prosthodontics course allocated for the third year students. The study had a double blind design with anonymously representative numbers (1-78) for students and letters for evaluators (A,B,C,D). On the dentoform, students were asked to prepare two ivory teeth (upper central incisor and lower first molar) in 140 minutes. After the examination, students were instructed to evaluate their own work based on published criteria. Grades were recorded and submitted for data analysis. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and multiple comparisons t-tests were used to test significance at 95% confidence level. As the distribution of the data was not normal according to Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, Mann Whitney test was applied for the comparisons at 0.05 level of significance.

Result: Results showed a statistically significant difference (P=.0001) between the subjective assessment which was more consistent than the criteria based assessment. There was more agreement on grading posterior tooth (Molar) than the anterior tooth (Central incisor). There was moderate correlation between the final grade and the subjective assessment and between the final grade and assessment by faculty. There was weak correlation between the final grade and the objective assessment and between the final grade and assessment by Demonstrators.

Conclusion: Based on the results, there was no consistently preferred assessment method. All the factors tested affected the students' evaluation.
