Competency-based assessment of laboratory procedures, Fiji National University

Objective: The competency based assessment was introduced into assessment of  laboratory skills of 2nd and 3rd year  Diploma in Dental Technology program in 2010. Previously the method utilized was signing of for completion for each laboratory stage completed. To determine the impact of introduction of competency assessment in laboratory practice among students enrolled in the Diploma in Dental Technology program. 

Method: This is part of a longitudinal study being undertaken to determine the impact of competency based assessments in the dental program at the Department of Oral Health, College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences , Fiji National University. A focus group interview will be used to explore the impact of introduction of this form of assessment in the dental technology program.

Result: The assessment of laboratory skills presently being undertaken includes fabrication of appliances in orthodontics, fabrication of removal and fixed prosthesis

Conclusion: Students are better prepared for laboratory skills sessions and develop a better understanding on how their work can be improved in future through the structured feedback provided during these sessions.
