The National Study of Adult Oral Health (NSAOH) 2017-18: the third Australian adult oral health study

Objectives: To present an overview of the methodologies being used in the NSAOH 2017-18.
Methods: NSAOH 2017-18 has two main components: (i) a cross-sectional study of a nationwide representative sample of people aged 15 years and over (n=15,000 interviews and 7,500 dental examinations) and (ii) a longitudinal study targeting those 5,500 participants in NSAOH 2004-06. The study comprises a primary questionnaire, which can be completed through a computer assisted telephone interview (CATI) or online, an oral epidemiological examination and a supplementary questionnaire. The primary questionnaire covers a range of topics including demographics characteristics, socioeconomic status, self-reported oral health, risk and protective factors for oral diseases, pattern of dental visiting and barriers to use of dental services. The oral examination assesses a wide range of major oral health outcomes. The supplementary questionnaire includes general and oral health related quality of life assessment, orofacial pain, smoking and alcohol consumption, biometrics, dental visiting history, a comprehensive assessment of fluoride exposure along with oral-health related behaviours and the level of support for policy interventions.
Results: To date, nearly 10% of those invited to be part of the study have refused, while nearly 70% of those who agreed to participate have consented to be dentally examined. The field work started in South Australia in May 2007. As at 1 September 2017, 4986 and 944 participants across SA, Victoria, NSW and Tasmania have participated in the CATI from the cross-sectional and longitudinal studies respectively.
Conclusions: This study will provide a platform for surveillance and hypothesis-driven research.
