Dental problems in general medical practice – how common are they and how are they managed

Objectives: The aims of this study are to provide insight into the motives contributing to patients seeking dental related treatment through a general medical practitioner, how these patients are routinely managed, and to evaluate the appropriateness of the treatment provided.

Methods: This project was conducted via an electronically distributed survey completed by general medical practitioners currently registered with the Australian Medical Association (AMA). Invitations for participation were distributed to AMA branches nationally via email. The survey consisted of 19 standardised questions, using a combination of both quantitative and qualitative responses. All responses were anonymous and collected through Qualtrics Survey software.

Results: From 141 responses collected, the most common reasons that dental related issues presented to general medical practitioners included: cost of dental consult, perceived need for antibiotics, ease of access and immediate relief of pain. 67.14% of presentations were reported to be during typical business hours. Antibiotic (79.86%) and analgesic (90.58%) prescription followed by referral to a dentist (77.7%) were the most frequently reported managements for dental related issues.
Conclusion: The results of this study will provide a foundation for assessment of general practitioner management of dental related issues.

Conclusions: The results of this study will provide a foundation for assessment of general practitioner management of dental related issues.
