Assessing trend of school dental program delivery in the Lautoka/Yasawa subdivision (2013-2015)

Objectives: To assess trend of the school dental program in Lautoka/Yasawa subdivision in Fiji in a 3-year period, explore factors contributing to/limit it’s implementation and recommend improvements.
Methods: The subdivision looks after fifty two primary schools Retrospective analysis of secondary data on conservative treatment, dental extraction, fissure sealants and oral health achievements example caries free, dentally fit and events of tooth brushing drills were computed in a matrix.
Results: Caries free was approximately 60% in class 1 children, fissure sealant 75% for Class 2-5, while an increase in 12 year-olds made dentally fit from 52% to 86%. Fluoride application, oral health education and tooth brushing drills increased consistently. Conservative treatment increased in 2013 and 2014, while a fluctuation of cases in 2015. Extraction due to dental caries was high in 2013 and 2015 but lowest in 2014. Reported cases of dental extraction due to other reasons were very low. Fluoride application was the most common of preventive treatment in the 3 years. Application of ART increased from 2.8% to 13.5% and referral of cases increased from 5.7% to 11.0%.
Conclusions: While the government provide free dental services to all schools in Fiji, not all children utilized this service. Majority of children seek relief of pain rather than routine care. High levels of dental disease have been associated with children who seek dental treatment for symptomatic rather than preventive reason. In the 3-year period (2013-2015), preventive treatment was increasing, conservative treatment was low, and dental extractions due to dental caries were still high.
