SPONTANEOUS BONE REGENERATION: case report and review of the literature

Objectives:To present a case of spontaneous bone regeneration in a 16-year-old black African after mandibular resection. Methods: A case presentation Results:A 16-year-old black African boy was seen in the oral and maxillofacial unit(MFU) clinic with a left mandibular swelling of 3 years duration. Examination revealed a firm lesion with associated limitation of mouth opening due to the bulkiness. Incision biopsy was done and gave the histopathological result of odontogenic myxoma of the mandible. Arrangements were made and he had subtotal mandibulectomy using Risdon incision which was uneventful. He was discharged 7 days later on mandibulo-maxillary fixation. On his second post operative visit(3 month) bone was felt and confirmed with radiograph. At review after one year the new bone has united with the bone stump. Conclusion:This case of spontaneous bone regeneration shows the benefit of immobilization after mandibular resection. Key words: Bone regeneration, Odontogenic myxoma, mandibular resection.
