Pattern of Maxillofacial Trauma

Objectives: To assess Pattern and Associated Factors of Maxillofacial Trauma at St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Methods: The study was Cross Sectional Retrospective Medical Record Review. All medical records of patients presented with maxillofacial trauma at Dental and Maxillofacial Surgery Department of SPHMMC during the five year period from September 2011-2016 G.C. were reviewed. The data was collected from February – May, 2017 G.C and analyzed by SPSS Version 20.
Results: 3595 Medical Records were reviewed, of which 79.7 % were males. The mean age was 27.69 (SD+ 12.437). The Age groups between 15 -24 (35.4 %) and 25 – 34 (30.7 %) were commonly affected. 97.5 % were treated in the out-Patient department. Interpersonal violence was the leading cause (77.7%) followed by Road Traffic Accident (12.4%). In age category of 1 – 4, fall was the major cause of trauma (52 %). The majority of the patients presented with both hard and soft tissue injuries (73.8%). Dento-alveolar fracture was the most common hard tissue injury (64.8%) followed by Mandibular (22.6%) and Mid-face fractures (6.4%). The commonest site of fracture on mandible was the Body (31.6%) whereas the Zygomatic arch (48.3%) in Mid-face. Head injury was the most common associated injury (16.3 %).
Conclusions: This study showed Interpersonal Violence is the most common cause of maxillofacial injuries; probably due to social, cultural and economic factors. Governmental institutions, Community Elders, Religious leaders and schools should work together to reduce physical aggression and violence.
