HIV Related Stigma in Public Dental Hospitals in Khartoum State, 2016
Objectives: To measure HIV discriminatory practices in dental care settings and to explore possible factors that perpetuate stigma among dental providers in public dental hospitals in Khartoum state, Sudan.
Methods: Analytical cross sectional study was carried out in two public dental hospitals in Khartoum state, Sudan. A total of 246 dentists were randomly sampled from Khartoum dental hospital and Academy hospital. Self administered questionnaire developed and validated by UNAIDS was used to collect the data. Stigma score was generated and levels of stigma were divided into low , moderate and high. Descriptive and inferential statistics were carried out to assess level of stigma and analyze stigma associated factors
Results: HIV related stigma exists in the two dental hospitals. Discriminatory practices such as denial of care and wearing double gloves were reported by 70% and more dentists .
Drivers of HIV related stigma in dental care setting in Khartoum includes individual factors such as fear of contagiousness and moral judgment in addition to institutional and structural factors such as inadequate trainings, un -safe working environment and lack of supportive policies that ensure the health workers wellbeing and human right for PLHIV in state as well as health care institutions. No statistical significance was found between refused and non refused dentist groups with regards to age, HIV training and dentist title
Conclusions: HIV related discrimination was evident, and had negatively affected the provision of care among dental providers in main public dental hospital in Khartoum. Continuums of discriminatory practices were reported from verbal abuse up to denial of care for PLHIV
