Oral Health Related Quality Of Life In Chronic Periodontitis Patients.

Objectives: To assess the impact of chronic periodontitis on oral health-related quality of life in a group of Sudanese patients with chronic periodontitis using the Oral Impact on Daily Performance inventory (OIDP).
Methods: A total of 100 patients were recruited from dental clinic of Faculty of Dentistry/ University of Khartoum and Khartoum Dental Teaching Hospital / Khartoum/ Sudan to participate in this cross-sectional study. They were diagnosed with chronic periodontitis. Demographic data were collected using structured questionnaire. Clinical periodontal examination was performed and the extent of chronic periodontitis was recorded as (localized/generalized), while the severity was recorded as (mild/moderated/severe). The Arabic version of the eight OIDP inventory was used to assess oral health-related quality of life.
Results: Difficulty in chewing was the most affected OIDP domain. Females had higher OIDP mean than males (P value < 0.01). The Extent of chronic periodontitis was significantly associated with difficulty in chewing (P value <0.01). The difficulty on speaking was significantly associated with the severe form of chronic periodontitis (P value <0.05). Linear regression analysis revealed that age, gender and extent of chronic periodontitis significantly predicted the mean OIDP sum score (P value <0.05)
Conclusions: Chronic periodontitis negatively affected some of the OIDP domains; namely: difficulty in chewing and speaking. Multivariate analysis revealed that age, gender and extent of chronic periodontitis have an impact on patients’ oral health related quality of life.
